Early residents of Rowan County came primarily from Pennsylvania and Virginia and were mostly of Scotch-Irish and German descent. The Scotch-Irish settled predominantly in the west and northwestern sections of the county beginning in the 1740s, while the German settlers arrived a few years later establishing communities in the southeastern portion of the county.
