Celebrating Gold Hill's Mining Heritage

Founder’s Day highlights the story of the once-booming gold mining town through hands-on demonstrations and historical interpretation. Visitors can experience heritage exhibits throughout the park, including:

  • Gold panning demonstrations

  • Hit-and-miss engine displays

  • Hand wood carving and traditional crafts

  • History hayrides and self-guided tours

These interactive experiences offer a closer look at the tools, trades, and daily life that shaped Gold Hill’s early years.

Arts, Vendors & Live Bluegrass

More than 65 artisan vendors and food trucks line the festival grounds, offering handmade goods, local art, and a variety of festival favorites. Live performances from the North Carolina Bluegrass Association take place throughout the day at the amphitheater, creating a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere.

The day begins with the Founder’s Day Parade and continues with music, shopping, and activities designed for visitors of all ages.

Explore the Historic Village

Just steps from the festival, the restored Gold Hill village invites guests to slow down and explore original buildings and locally owned shops. Visitors can browse unique merchandise, pick up a Gold Hill map, or stop by the E.H. Montgomery General Store for a cold bottled soda or hand-dipped ice cream before returning to the festivities.

Plan Your Visit

Gold Hill Founder’s Day takes place each September and is hosted by the Historic Gold Hill and Mines Foundation. Most activities are held outdoors, so visitors are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather.

The event’s open layout makes it easy to explore at your own pace, whether you’re browsing vendors, enjoying live music, or learning about the area’s history.

Make It a Weekend Getaway

Many visitors turn Founder’s Day into a fall weekend in Rowan County. Staying overnight allows time to explore nearby attractions, scenic countryside, and Salisbury’s historic downtown, along with local dining, breweries, and shopping.

Proceeds from the festival support the preservation and ongoing restoration of Gold Hill Mines Historic Park, helping protect this unique piece of Rowan County history.
