Tourism & Destination Development
In Rowan County, every investment in tourism is an investment in the community’s story of how it’s experienced, shared, and remembered by those who visit. Rowan County Tourism takes a thoughtful, strategic approach to funding projects that enhance the destination, attract visitors, support business travel, and contribute to long-term economic growth. Through the use of occupancy tax (paid by those who stay in local hotels, motels, and short-term rentals) we’re able to reinvest directly into efforts that elevate Rowan County as a place people want to explore.
Guided by NC Session Law 2017-202, up to one-third of these funds can be directed toward tourism-related capital and destination development projects. From improving wayfinding to expanding and revitalizing key assets and creating welcoming gateways, each initiative is carefully considered and approved by the Rowan County Tourism Board of Directors. While these projects are designed to enhance the visitor experience and draw more travelers, they also create lasting benefits for the community by ensuring Rowan County continues to grow as a destination that both visitors and residents can enjoy.
Rowan County Tourism is combining synergistic and complimentary tourism assets into two areas of focus (tourism hubs) utilizing a dual track approach with emphasis on both rural and urban tourism development.
Rowan County Tourism strives to make strategic investments in destination development throughout Rowan County, in accordance with NC Session Law 2017-202.
In February 2025, Rowan County Tourism broke ground on the development of the alleyway that connects the Farmers Market Pavilion to the Railwalk District in Downtown Salisbury.
Rowan County Tourism has undertaken strategic efforts to improve visitor experience, strengthen brand identity, and enhance booking convenience.
The Completion & Connection update was developed as an extension of the Ten-Year Master Plan to further guide the destination development in Rowan County, North Carolina.
Completion & Connection, a Ten-Year Tourism Industry Master Plan was commissioned by the Rowan County Tourism Development Authority. The purpose of developing such a plan is to guide destination marketing and destination development in Rowan County, North Carolina.
Rowan County Tourism Development Authority Tourism Development funds are designed to assist individuals, communities or organizations initiating, developing, planning, constructing, or expanding tourism-related assets in Rowan County.
