A Brief History of Spencer

Spencer's story is closely tied to the railroad industry. In 1896, Southern Railway established the Spencer Shops, a massive steam locomotive repair facility strategically located along the rail line connecting Atlanta and Washington, D.C. The shops quickly became one of the most important railroad maintenance facilities in the Southeast.

As railroad workers and their families settled nearby, a thriving community developed around the shops. The town was officially incorporated in 1905 and named after Samuel Spencer, the first president of Southern Railway. By the 1920s, Spencer had become a bustling railroad town and a vital part of North Carolina's transportation history.

Today, much of that heritage is preserved through the North Carolina Transportation Museum and the town's historic neighborhoods.
