Fred and Alice Stanback Educational Forest
The Fred and Alice Stanback Educational Forest, fondly known as Spencer Woods, is a serene 100-acre natural retreat located at the end of 11th Street in Spencer. This protected passive park, developed through a partnership with Three Rivers Land Trust and the Town of Spencer, features roughly 8,000 linear feet of scenic hiking trails, two rustic shelters, and a peaceful pond with a floating dock. Thanks to a Great Trails State grant, an additional 7,500 linear feet of trails will be added in 2026, expanding opportunities for exploration. Recent enhancements - made possible through generous grants and donations - ensure this outdoor haven remains a beautiful place for reflection, recreation, and connection with nature.
N.C. Museum of Dolls, Toys & Miniatures

Downtown Spencer has come alive with color and creativity thanks to a multi-year mural initiative that began in 2021. Led by LFNC Fellow and MPA Intern Skye Allan, the project brought together local artists, property owners, and community leaders to restore historic “ghost” signs and create a collection of new murals celebrating the town’s heritage and spirit. From honoring Spencer’s labor history to showcasing outdoor recreation along the Yadkin River, each piece tells a unique story of the community. With four murals now complete along Fourth Street, Fifth Street, and Salisbury Avenue, the project stands as a vibrant testament to collaboration, creativity, and civic pride - with even more planned for the future as funding allows.
