Nothing completes a trip to Rowan County better than a local dining experience. We've set out to highlight a few of the many local restaurants that make our destination an original place to visit and eat. We’ve created a series of some of our many favorite original restaurants in Rowan County. Up next, Sidewalk Deli.
Locals and visitors alike know and love Sidewalk Deli as the soup, salad and sandwich staple stop in Downtown Salisbury, but there’s more to the story than that.
Sidewalk Deli’s owner, Rick Anderson, has owned and operated his deli for 25 years in Downtown Salisbury. He opened the Deli with his late husband, Scott McCombs, on May 23, 1996.
Their handwritten chalk board menu has items named after local landmarks, community icons, friends and neighbors. Their menu gives them a deep tie to Salisbury and Rowan County. They serve Thumann’s deli meat, homemade egg, chicken and tuna salad, homemade salad dressings, homemade cookies and cakes and so much more!
We can recite our favorite orders at any given moment. Potato soup in a bread bowl with a side salad and homemade Greek feta dressing on Saturdays, Bert’s Best Club with red skin potato salad on Thursdays, McCombs chicken salad on a croissant with broccoli salad on Tuesdays. Yes, we’ll eat there every day of the week given the chance. Oh, and don’t forget a slice of Rick’s homemade cake. If you’re craving a combination that’s not on the menu, they’ll make it happen, and they’ll remember it the next time you come in.
In fact, Rick and his staff will remember your name, your order, your kids and just about everything else once you become a regular. It will feel like home each time you walk through the door. The deli is home for Rick, but Salisbury is too. Rick grew up in Salisbury and is proud to be a lifelong member of the community.
Sidewalk Deli is open for lunch Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. They offer outdoor seating, indoor seating, to go orders and curb side pick up. Grab lunch or call it in at 704-637-DELI or 704-637-3354
